A New Normal: Travel 2021

Join me as we begin again- as we discover a new way to travel- a safer- more cautious way. May we appreciate every single day we have and not forget what isolation and fear and separation required of us.

Fort at Old San Juan- Beautiful

Discovery
Ponce de Leon is edging into the beautiful bay. White sails above the wooden vessel are in full bloom. Lush green trees are thrusting thick leaves over the beaches providing a canopy with an invitation to enter and explore. I can feel the excitement of the crew. I am one of them. We are here.

Museo de las Americas
In Old San Juan, it takes more than one museum to capture all the history. Salon 1 in the Museo de las Americas is enough to satisfy the most curious. Depicting all the Americas (the U.S. being only one), it takes you down the Amazon to see current communities unchanged by course of time. Spectacular!

23 statues of Amazon natives by Felipe Lettersten

Saw amazing video creating these-world class

A real shrunken head!
And this is how its done!

Blue Highways
Too bad we can’t push off from shore and sail directly to Greenland; the currents won’t allow it. Magellan hugged the shore of Africa before catching the trade winds to South America and then precious time was lost when he sailed beyond the Pacific trade winds. Oceans, seas, rivers, and streams; highways of the past!

David poses at Fort wall

Beautiful cemetery!

Debbie poses at a cool fountain

David finds another statue friend lol

Chirping Birds
News for all serious bird-watchers; along Dr. Ashford Boulevard in North San Juan, one fancy hotel after the next has exactly the same sounding chirping bird. Once spotted it is strange indeed. Black in color it likes to stay close to the trunk of trees and its sound is predictable and consistent. Call it “Mechanical.”

Great Dinner

Walk on the beach in downpour
Caught
Beautiful evening, scrumptious Italian outdoor meal on a veranda overlooking the ocean beside a delightful plaza, this followed by delicious ice cream even closer to the shore. “Let’s walk back on the beach,” suggests Debbie. Halfway we are limping along in soft sand in a blinding storm soaked to the bone. Laughing all the way.
