Join me as we begin again- as we discover a new way to travel- a safer- more cautious way. May we appreciate every single day we have and not forget what isolation and fear and separation required of us.

Water
Hard to escape water, three-fourths of the world’s surface is covered by it, no surprise all the great cities are near it. We set out to experience it once again; this time stopping on peaks that made it to the surface – the islands of the Southern Caribbean. Time to relax, enjoy, discover, and give thanks.

The Suite
Dying is not so bad when you are focused on the here and now. And wow, we are living for a week in luxury, a “junior suite.” Bathtub, living room, large balcony; a mansion on the back of the ship, we watch the waves spread across the sea and islands slowly disappear below the horizon.

A Jewel
Jewel of the Seas, ship extraordinaire, is aptly named. Our suite exceeds expectations, our dinner table is directly below a large oval window to the sea and we have daily access to the Thermal Spa. Considerable contraband (coke and water) brought aboard will sustain us, our only need, an extension cord for my breathing machine.

Dinner Companions
Frank and Jenna near Charlotte, North Carolina, are enjoyable, friendly, the kind of people with whom you would like to sit down and have a chat. She is a second grade teacher, he a retired utility guy. Widow and widower married after cancer took both their spouses; he volunteers in nursing homes; I like that.

Looking Back
Homeless beggars, soiled clothes, gnarled teeth, shopping baskets, blankets, cardboard and small dogs; the people living on the street in San Juan were ubiquitous. Cups in hands shaking a tune with jingling coins, the contrast with our good luck in life is disturbing. We hurt and cry for their misfortune and misery, but do little.
