A New Normal: Travel 2021

Join me as we begin again- as we discover a new way to travel- a safer- more cautious way. May we appreciate every single day we have and not forget what isolation and fear and separation required of us.

We begin with another amazing breakfast on the porch. The cats seem to remember Karla defending them and George has to fight one off to keep it out of the house. We watch the famous donkeys pass by and head to the port to work at bringing cruise ship guests up the mountain. After breakfast we catch a bus and ride to the ruins on the island.

Akrotiri was a small village from the early bronze age 5000 years before Christ was born (5th millennium BC) - it is earlier than ancient Greece! It was preserved by a volcanic ash and has been being renovated since 1967. It is a complete city including a sewage system! It is housed in a special shelter with walk ways and a roof to protect it. Each summer Columbia University students come to “dig” up more. They have sadly had to remove the artifacts and put in museums around the world to protect them. This is one of the earliest civilizations ever found. It is a little known gem here in paradise.

We leave and head to the uninspiring Red Beach. However, on the way back on the long hot walk to the bus I stumble upon a sign for seafood on the sea- so we walk down a million steps to a very special place! This little community of a few restrauants and a cave in the side of the cliff is truly amazing. There is a runway with tables allowing us to eat right on the water! Secluded and peaceful the breeze is very refreshing. George takes charge and orders us an appetizer called FAVA that is smashed chick peas and octopus in olive oil. We also have a Cretian salad that is olive oil, fresh tomatoes, and feta cheese on top of home made bread. Karla orders octopus in vinegar and Kerry orders grilled octopus- I avoid it all with simple and terrific salmon.

Sailboats, kayaks, and tour boats pass by and we watch the crystal clear water and feel the cool breeze. Suddenly Kerry gets excited as he realized he has seen one of these places on the food network! After lunch we walk over and he is right- someone from there was making tomato balls on American TV. Kerry is beyond excited!

George shows us how short the ancient folks were
We catch the bus back and cool off in the villa- its very hot today.  Dinner was fun. Ollie look at my Sea Bass fish! Also tried to upload some video music for you to hear- sung in Greek language.
