A New Normal: Travel 2021

Join me as we begin again- as we discover a new way to travel- a safer- more cautious way. May we appreciate every single day we have and not forget what isolation and fear and separation required of us.

No alarm needed for Tina and I today! We are up and ready to go 30 minutes early. We load the car with our bags; mine much heavier than hers and off to Starbucks for fuel to get us to the airport. Once we park the car and go to the American self check in I am notified we will pay $25 for each bag. Not a chance! I paid dearly for the AA credit card that lets me have access to the Admirals club and gives me and those with me free bags. After standing in two lines we meet a young man who is determined to help us- Hooray! Handing him my executive platinum credit card he investigates- and tells me I did not use that card to buy the tickets. Yep he’s correct I used my former AA executive platinum card- the one that I dropped in Sears a few days after David died and got cancelled on me and replaced! Yikes- how will I prove this? The young man must have thought I looked trustworthy and went to a supervisor to fix it- he said we looked happy and ready to travel. David would have gotten his name- and of course reported it here- I must practice his powers of observation! He would also say- savings $50. I’ve decided to count all the savings on this trip- much more David like than counting the costs! Next we head to the Admirals club for sodas and free Internet as we wait for our plan. Savings $50 for daily pass to Admirals club and $5.00 for soda. Doing great as so far I’m up to $105 for the day and its only noon- David would be proud and would of course be singing my praises as an outstanding traveler not a tourist!

The flight was uneventful except for the hilarious memory it generates. We encounter crazy turbulence shortly after leaving the stormy St Louis airport. As the plane is rocking, rolling, and jumping Tina says, “I hope no one is in the bathroom!” I laugh and remember a flight David and I had last year from Dallas to Columbia. Naturally David could not wait and had to get permission for an emergency trip to the back of the plane to the bathroom. During his visit we of course are encountering all kinds of bumps- including a big drop! He emerges and sits across the isle from me laughing and grinning ear to ear. He begins to share that no one should enter that bathroom as the walls have just been given a shower by him during that drop. OMG only he would try to pee in turbulence standing!!

Tina and I arrive and manuever our way to the Tri-Rail and for $5 make our way to Miami. Again David would call this a savings because we could use air miles and have free plane fare to Miami he would count a savings of $300 each. We get to Ft Lauderdale airport, pick up our rental car and Becky. Savings here is $75 as the rental car also covered by points. Total savings today then is $780 using OIB math!

We enjoy a great time at Robs with Ben entertaining us with jokes, dog tricks, and guitar. Rob honors David by passing the bread- it was very very moving!

Barb made us an amazing dinner which we were starved for since we had not eaten since morning! A late night of fun and off for best run hotel in the world- Robs Courtyard!
