Good Morning |
Tablemates Frank and Gina |
“Respect the Procedure”
Memorable breakfast. Every now and
then you acquire a phrase that makes a point quickly leaving no doubt its
intent. Our tall slender Bosnian waiter delivers a tiny half banana on a huge
plate crowding out all other dishes. I looked at him bewildered, “Why?” Recalling
his training days, smiling, he explains, “Respect the procedure.”
Water Taxi
Options galore, we choose the water
taxi to Downtown Phillipsburg, St. Maarten, the Dutch side of this small
divided island with France. Shared since 1648, one of four countries constituting
the Kingdom of the Netherlands, sounds pretty nifty don’t you think.
World-class port in the Caribbean, beautiful, friendly, clean, and relaxing!
Serenity comes to mind.
Holland House Hotel
Per our usual style, we select a
first-rate hotel on the waterfront. On the veranda with water and soda, we
spend the morning there. Good thing, intermittent showers and heavy downpours
burst from the sky blowing and cooling everything and everyone in sight. We sit
comfortably watching it unfold. A kind, elderly gentleman joins us.
Roger
He was 82-years old, a Pinnacle
Man (over 100 cruises), Well known on Royal ships, three wives, first and
second died of cancer, the third Alzheimer’s. Many girlfriends qualify if they
will go cruising with him. Tears watered his cheeks when discussing caregiving
for wives during the end stage. Engaging gentleman, teacher, guide, and sage.
Service Excellence?
Needing a towel, I plead to five
different spa staffers. Finally the manager tries to appease me, and asks,
“Were they wearing green uniforms?” And, “Do you have a name?” Walking away
dripping, I replied nicely, “I am wet, I simply need a towel; if you are
committed to service excellence I hope things improve.”
