Roger Revisited
“Often I won’t eat breakfast when
at home; I don’t want to be alone,” Roger explains as we join him. Expressing
his thanks to have some companionship we realize that cruising is his answer to
staying engaged, finding value and worth in relationships. Surviving three wives
requires adaptation. He cruises and enjoys Debbie taking picture.
The Gauntlet
Antiqua means “ancient.” From the ship, two thousand tourists are
forced to traverse down a main avenue from which there is no escape. A gauntlet
of orange clad men (taxi recruiters) reach for your hand, slaps your space with
beach brochures, and are unrelenting in their loud aggressive approach. The
natives are still in charge.
Public Bathroom
I suppose if you bought diamonds
in the ship-sponsored stores they may let you pee. Cheap commoners like us,
however, go around back. The public “Bathroom” stench is smothering, the only
gender door usable is for women, people hover about, sewers are being rooted,
and I stand guard. When you gotta go, you gotta go.
Quads, Gluts, and Hams
“He said, ‘Work on quads before
getting back on the bicycle,’” she repeats it a million times. He is my doc;
she is my wife. Two days now, fifty minutes on a stationary bike, three
repetitions of twelve on a leg press; my Quadriceps are coming around. Soon to
be back in the saddle again!
The World Cup
I attended my first movie only a
year after the end of the Second World War. I remember standing with everyone
singing the National Anthem. Today we did the same thing prior to the USA World
Cup match. Kindred souls all around; we lost 2-1, but stood proud. I wore a
Stars & Stripes shirt.
