An extended life affords me some quality time with Debbie for a last fling in my beloved Rocky Mountains. Not too aggressive treatments but carefully considered ones, has accorded me nearly three years since spreading cancer was discovered in my body. One round of chemo, targeted neck surgery, and palliative radiation was successful in shrinking the growth and affording me quality time instead of fighting it in clinics and hospitals to the end. For me the decisions were good, and now as a hot node is beginning to spread the killer further, we return to my favorite niche in the world, Estes Park, Colorado and Rocky Mountain National Park for a last fling.
My ashes will eventually rest here, hopefully beginning in Loch Vale (Lake) if my children can make it three miles up, and three miles down. They have promised but time will tell if they throw me in the poison ivy on the way up. Nevertheless, while I am feeling good I am refreshed in these mountains, they sooth my soul and give me hope for what lies ahead. I offer a tribute to them with one my 55-worders:
Everlasting Peace
Blue tops, clear bottoms; cloudless skies decorate. Cradling mountains cup lakes, streams, ponds, while trees blowing in the wind applaud. Melting snow passes through meadows, birds sing and bathe fluttering feathers above water. Chipmunks play. Afternoon shower refreshes anew, ants on twigs float toward waterfalls; eagles survey prey as land dries below a smiling sun.
