A New Normal: Travel 2021

Join me as we begin again- as we discover a new way to travel- a safer- more cautious way. May we appreciate every single day we have and not forget what isolation and fear and separation required of us.

July 4, 2014 Sea Day

Independence Day
Antarctica 750 miles to the South; missed it, but not 6 other continents. Been there, done that. The United States of America in sad state; Republicans continue to sabotage progress, equality not realized, lower income population grows, corporate greed reigns, yet in spite, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness prevails; comparatively, U.S. pretty good.

Cancer
“Have you thought about it?” “I think about it every day.” but less, easy to forget on the high seas. Forgetting death is at the door is like thinking I can drink again, both dangerous. Life much richer, savoring moments; freedom from alcohol, serenity! Each day well lived, brings happiness from yesterday, hope for tomorrow.

Legacy of Becoming
Our children, world travelers, grandchildren too! Mission was to educate along ocean highways, great cities on water, visiting, learning, growing, expanding knowledge, thinking, evaluating! Ethnocentric thoughts flee, a world perspective gained, a legacy is born. Expensive, yes, however a global village was waiting, our kids are better off having found it. We are so proud.

Floating Object
“Ladies and gentleman, please don’t be alarmed we are turning the ship around to inspect a strange floating object spotted by one of our officers.” Two thousand passengers hurry to starboard; “There it is!” all shout and point. Half submerged seven-foot dinghy no survivors visible. International sea ethics satisfied, we turn back; “Respect the procedure.”

Tears

Sitting comfortably with Debbie studying the ocean’s horizon, my gaze turns to catch tears flowing down her cheeks. Discovered, she tries unsuccessfully to wipe them away, I don’t need to ask, I know what they mean. There is the person with cancer and there is the caregiver. The first dies, the latter is left alone.
Happy 4th!
